This past week, the Chicago White Sox released their city connect uniforms. The White Sox uniforms are the third set out of seven to drop out of the Nike campaign. The Nike City Connect jerseys are intended to show the connection between a team and the city they play in. These uniforms show culture, beauty, and originality from each team.
The first seven teams partaking in this campaign are the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins and the San Francisco Giants. Nike is quoted describing the creative process of the 2021 city connect jersey: as continuing to, “explore a franchise’s connection to its city and its fanbase, each with distinct personalities, values, customs and traditions.”
This campaign dives deeper than just a shirt and pants – it is history. The idea is to give each team an identity more than a city baseball team. These jersey’s factor in everything from joy to despair, which shows the unique beauty in each one.
At a first glance at the White Sox City Connect jerseys, you see the classic black and white colors the team is known for. The all black jerseys are accompanied with the white pinstripes, which is a staple of the modern Chicago White Sox. The highlight of the jersey’s is the exclusion of the logo, team name, city and the inclusion of the word “Southside”, in gothic font, across the middle of the jersey.
To be a Sox fan, you have to understand that the meaning of Southside is more than just a location of Chicago. It is a culture that is indescribable for many, but respected nonetheless. These jersey’s also have a black ball cap with the nickname “CHI ” across the top. These jerseys were the best to pay homage to the White Sox legacy, fanbase and the city of Chicago.
