Chicago’s Goldenboymnny has been able to navigate the underground to a point where he could surpass that status by the end of the year. Chicago is packed with artists with potential, not to mention the underground scene in general is loaded with new sounds and pure talent. His unique sound carries him on beats that creates a cool listening experience few artists can match.
Goldenboymnny, Mnny for short, dropped his first project, “GB Meets World” back in 2019. This album got the 21-year-old in tune with hardcore rap fans in across the underground scene, especially in Chicago. His most recent album, “Once Upon a Time” released a year later on all platforms and since has seen his soundcloud page get a lot of traction. He recently added his discography onto Apple Music & Spotify for his fans.
Artists all get inspiration from different sources, whether it’s a different era of music or similar artists. Mnny says he pulls from for creativity to make up his unique sound.
“I get inspired by a lot of things to be honest, but right now, I’d have to say I’m the most inspired by 80s music and the current underground soundcloud wave” Mnny said. “The underground music scene especially because there’s just some really interesting sounds and so many ideas floating around out there that are really enticing.”
Goldenboymnny continued to say how music from the 80’s such as R&B and Jazz has potentially shaped what fans hear today.
“I love 80s music, there’s some jazz influence with my music since I listened to it so much” Mnny said. “I don’t structure my songs in the way rappers do, that’s not what my songs entirely are other than the fact the words rhyme.”
The background of where Goldenboymnny gets his inspirations from makes total sense. His parents played a lot of music from the 70s & 80s while growing up, then once he got to middle school that’s when he was introduced to rap.
“Honestly this starts back to when I was 8 or 9,” Mnny said. “Back to when I was just playing instruments like the drums. It really helped me hoan in on learning about rhythm. When I was in middle school, I started to listen to rap heavy, I listened to all the GOATs like Eminem, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z. I was predominately listening to rap because my parents listened to R&B and Jazz” Mnny said. “Overall, it allowed me to appreciate different types of sounds I can apply throughout my music.”
These are the following artists from the 1970s & 1980s Goldenboymnny listens to the most:
- Earth, Wind, & Fire
- John Lennon
- Kool and the Gang
- Michael Jackson
- Prince
I picked his brain more about listening to a variety genres of music importance and had this to say about it:
“I listen to everything, I barely listen to just one genre whether I’m making music or not. You never know what you can pull from a song, the lines of ‘genres’ have blurred so it can help you make any kind of music which is cool.”
Goldenboymmny is working with notable producers in the underground scene. Prod. Ra is a childhood friend of his. Ra is the producer behind the 2020 smash hit, “3 Vets.” Mnny also is linking with Chicago underground producers 5HERiFF (pronounced Sheriff) & CEO BEATZ on music that hasn’t been released. Mnny told me how he’s been working with them since last year.
“It’s been nice to hang around with them,” Mnny said. “We all hit the studio whether it’s all of us or it’s a random pairing. We hang out as homies too and we generally are friends. It’s awesome having my team around me in the studio” Many said. “My growth comes from people finding my music, it’s not even the new songs, they listen to the music from my first project that I don’t even like anymore. I look at that like, ‘well I don’t like this anymore, but it’s still cool you can enjoy it.’”
