Atlanta is well-known for the contributions the artists make for the HipHop/Rap game. Not only are the rappers influential across music, but the producers behind the most commercial songs out now. Producer MexikoDro The 2x platinum producer has worked with insanely successful artists such as Lil Yachty, Drake, Playboi Carti, Maxo Kream, and more.
The 26-year-old is notorious for being a pioneer producer in the SoundCloud era of rap music and has changed production in rap. His beats will stand out due to his unique, “PLUG” producer tag and the catchy sounds he’s created that have been copied by aspiring producers. The tag originated from MexikoDro’s plugs who are good friends to this day with him. MexikoDro was born and raised on the Southwest side of Atlanta, GA. However, his extended family lives in the Detroit, MI area. The 2x platinum producer has worked with major artists such as Lil Yachty, Drake, Playboi Carti, and more.
He got started when he was only 10 years old and his cousin was the one who downloaded FL studio onto his laptop. This means when he was a teenager, MexikoDro was in the studio making records for various artists on all levels on the scene. I asked Dro if being from Atlanta provided any type of influence on his sound.
“I’m from Atlanta, so whatever I do, I just goddamn do it, MexikoDro said.” It ain’t got nothing to do with where I’m from, whether they rock it with or not, it got nothing to do where I’m from, I just put it together.”
Some of the records MexikoDro have seen the highest point a song a reach. Having a platinum record to your discography, let alone two, is an incredible accomplishment for a young producer. Dro said that he can’t just let that be it for him & wants his new music to get on that level.
“I’m proud of [the platinum songs], but I’m not proud of that,” he said. “I’m tryna get more hits like it. That’s a big accomplishment for sure but that ain’t it for me. Now it’s time to make some more new sh*t.”
When working alongside Drake this year, MexikoDro said it was his mother who was the most overjoyed about it.
“After the whole situation with “From Florida With Love”, I told Drake how happy my momma was and I told him how happy my momma was like streaming because she was just very happy. Without saying too much about it, you know he said some really positive words to tell my momma and stuff like that. Drake is a real cool dude.”
It’s important to know though that MexikoDro is not just working with the big names, he’s worked with so many artists in his career. In December, he worked with the up & coming Detroit rapper Baby Smoove to produce 4 songs off his album, “Hardwood Classic.”
MexikoDro has been releasing his own projects for his fans on all distributing platforms. Since 2018, Dro has seemed to balance producer for himself and all his clients very well so I asked him what went into his process of making his own stuff.
The producer has had a front row seat to may artists career, which was why he was hesitant in the past to release music.
“Whatever was going on at the time of my life, that’s what was goin on and I just put it down into my songs,” MexikoDro said. “I just did my thing f*ck it I ain’t put that shit out because I ain’t tryna be famous for my stuff it’s what I like. I really did it in my spare time rapping isn’t what I want to do it ain’t truly me.”
Be on the lookout for some kind of music release in 2021. With only a few months left, he would have to drop sometime in the near future.
