The anticipated sequel of the original compilation album, Slime Language 2, was released on April 16th. Compiled by trio Young Thug, Gunna, Lil Keed and the rest of the label Young Stoner Life (YSL). This project incorporates various hot featured artists, some new and some returning from Slime Language, such as Travis Scott, Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Coi Leray, Nav and more. Slime Language 2 was produced by established producers that the label usually work with, such as Southside, Wheezy, Taurus, and many more. This project was a solid drop and in my personal opinion, is something that could be one of the best albums to come out in 2021.
Right before the album’s release the track “Ski” with YSL’s own Young Thug and Gunna has been making noise and the music video has caught lots of eyes for its standout creativity.
On a personal note: Young Thug and Gunna are probably one of my favorite power duo in the rap game right now. Their South Atlanta roots in their music bounces off really well together and they always create great hits. Their sound is modern and new, but Gunna and Thugger have so many positive influences from their southern counterparts, like Lil’ Wayne or Lil’ Jon. I also think that because Thug is a focused artist, whether it be creating the concept for these albums or even directing, The viewer can see how cohesive the project really is. Each track flowed with the track before it, while still coming with fresh and a different energy. Furthermore, the project was produced beautifully. Even the mellow tracks were still serving a vibe that I don’t think many mainstream artists during this time could create. The biggest criticism I can foresee in fans on this project was its length. While everyone loves a jam packed album with a number of tracks, I think some listeners might criticize how long most of the tracks are.
This project’s featured album featured songs were great. When I heard the track “Diamonds Dancing”, I instantly added it to my playlist and the track did not disappoint. It was super hip and exciting , definitely a track that’ll make you bounce. If you’ve read my past articles you can infer I am a Drake fan, and I was hesitant if he was going to mesh well with Gunna + Young Thug + what they were bringing. However, I think that because Drake did the chorus and was more of an addition, the track became stronger. Other mentionable featured tracks I would say are “Pots N Pans” featuring Lil Durk and NAV (an artist who fits in well with Gunna’s sound), “Paid the Fine” with Lil Baby and YTB Trench and “Take It to Trial” featuring Yak Gotti. Each of these tracks were well produced and as I previously mentioned brought a good but different vibe which listeners want.
Overall, this project was a great listen. I recommend 100% and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It really showed how versatile Young Thug, Gunna, and Young Stoner Life are. I don’t know about you guys, but this was the new project I personally needed to get through the end of the semester and the start of summer!
